When I started to think about the librarians toolbox I first thought about all the cool tools I have at my disposal on my computers, WordPress, Twitter, Facebook, Googlesuite etc., then I started to think back, to before these tools existed and how I managed then, with embryonic mail clients, Hotmail, coding websites in HTML, IRC or ICQ and Usenet. Then I thought even further back, to snailmail, telex printers, printed indexes and just meeting people face to face. And then it hit me, I had the really important tools with me the whole time. The fundamentals that made me capable of using and evaluating services no matter how advanced they are. I started out with two tools, and then added a third just lately (but I have been living by it way before I heard about it:-))

My number one tool is Ranganathans Five Laws of Librarianship. Yes, I still use the oldfashioned word Librarianship rather than Library science.

Books are for use

Every reader his [or her] book

Every book its reader

Save the time of the User

The library is a growing organism

With these simple and fundamental laws in the back of my mind I usually find it easy to evaluate a possible service or new gizmo pretty quickly.

The second tool is Adams first law. Don´t Panic! (preferrably in large friendly letters) Most of the time panic is a total waste of time. I have tried to live by this in that I try to handle things that come up on the assumption that most things are fixable and most people are approachable. This is not to say I don´t have my moments of panic, but I try to not let that slow me down or stop me from doing something I believe is right or good.

The third tool is the “Cult of Done Manifesto“. By not obsessing with trying to get things perfect I get more things done and tried. With that experience I can move on and use what I have learned to make things better or different. It made me able to pursue the idea of the first Digital and Social conference back in 2004, which I still think is the best, coolest and most fun conference I have ever attended. Mostly because it connected so many wonderful people that have later emerged as leaders and inspiration to all who work with libraries in the interface between the digital and the social dimension.

So, these are my tools, which will probably stay with me for the rest of my working life. What are your favorite tools?

Yesterday I participated in my first IRC session in 14 years. The occation was a meeting with Koha users and developers on the formation of a Koha foundation. The background is that the US company LibLime has decided to fork Koha, and establish an “Enterprise” edition. The reasons behind are hard to understand, and for me who just joined the Koha community it seems like a huge departure from the idea of open source, and actually a departure from the idea of sharing that libraries stand for as well.

Since I first discovered Koha a few years ago I have followed the development through information from LibLime and thought they did a wonderful job of promoting open source and still survive as a company by selling services instead of products. I have held this model up as a possible avenue of survival for norwegian ILS vendors and generally shouted out LibLime praise.

Since the news of the LibLime fork I have tried to understand the implications and how it will affect my library and installation. Fortunately Libriotech who implements our Koha installation and is our main service provider has clearly stated that they stand by the open source version of Koha and that they will not depart from the development and contribution model that has brought Koha to the point where it is today.

LibLime has brought upon its head a lot of dissapointment from developers around the world, and quite a few librarians react to this news as well. I am thus joining the choir of disaproval:-)

But yesterday I participated in a discussion that made me worry about the future of Koha. The purpose of the discussion was to establish some sort of organization that could take ownership of the Koha development and brand and hopefully avoid the situation we have today where LibLime owns the domain name koha.org and in the US have registered a Koha Foundation.

So the community is at a loss. What do we do now? Try to make a foundation that can take care of all the stuff that comes with an organization (for that is in reality what the development and use of Koha is turning into) or just try keep things going the way they have so far?

I know one thing, IRC is not a god format for discussions like this. I know that most of the participants where used to IRC from discussions and meetings on the development of Koha, but for a newbie like me, or any other “normal” librarian, it was a bevildering stream of text flashing by at a speed it was hard to keep up with. I tried to contribute but felt that what I wrote was injected into a totally different discussion than the one I responded to and it was hard to answer questions when things moved so fast.

I also noticed a distinct disinclination to try to organize things or try to build some sort of traditional structure. I mentioned that I thought we should approach IFLA and see if the only truely international library organization could possibly help in this case, but the response was that IFLA is to slow and to bureaucratic. I have thought about this and realize that the culture of open source and the culture of IFLA are probably so different that it would be a bad fit for both. So scratch that idea for now. Maybe later if IFLA re-invents itself as an organization oriented towards individual members and with a more tie-less structure.

Having initiated and led the Norwegian Library Association special interest group for ICT in libraries (SIKT) I have experience enough to know that starting a foundation or association for Koha is going to take a lot of work, and a more hierarchical structure than we have today. I also think that the users, i.e. the libraries, should be in the driving seat, not the developers and open source enthusiasts. Librarians are pretty good at organizing things, and Koha exists for the libraries and their users. It would probably be a good idea if some librarians in one geographical area, that actually can meet and discuss f2f, develop a proposal of alternatives (not more than two or three) for how a Koha foundation/association could be set up, and then present this to the Koha community for discussion. Then we must have a meeting, an IRL meeting, that establishes the entity in a way that is recognizable to librarians around the world as a point they can approach for information and help in all questions relating to Koha. Yesterday I felt that the discussion was too fragmented, the options not clear and the realities of our situation too complex to do justice on IRC.

Marshall Breeding have put forth a suggestion on how to organize Koha as foundation and even if I find his thougths interesting I cannot see that his proposal would work as an international entity the way I see neccesary for the needs for my library. Maybe we need to develop regional structures that all contribute to an international structure? An European Koha association, an US, an Asian etc.? There seems to be so many questions that it will take a while to sort them out. And sorting out messes is what librarians do so well. So, why not let the professionals do that, and let developers and companies contribute and play an auxillary role? I totally agree with Marshall Breeding in that we need to have libraries as the driving force behind the development here, for the simple reason that libraries survive and stay where individual companies and developers come and go.

The norwegian book boat Epos is my absolute favorite. I have worked on board for six years, three as the librarian in charge of planning and running the show in the Hordaland area. When you work on board you live, eat and breathe library. It is book centred and you meet people on islands where you would never go otherwise. This is the absolute top experience I have had as librarian.

I must have a thing for small and out of the ordinary libraries. This next library is situatet in one of the most beautiful places I know. The north Koster island on the swedish west coast.

The last week has brought up a new discussion on the future of e-books. It started with a post on Buns, blankets and bears; Are ebooks the new CD-ROM?, that I discovered on Twitter. I ReTweeted the post and it was posted on FriendFeed where Walt Crawford commented. This led to a short discussion which again caused me to wonder if the augmented e-books (a-books) would go the same way as the now unreadable CD-ROMs I have cluttering up a drawer in my desk. But there are some factors that might give a-books a better chance than the old CD-ROMs. First and foremost, people are more open to digitally enhanced experiences today than 10 years ago. Secondly, there is a culture for creation that was not there when CD-ROMs where the bee’s knees, of course you had to have a million dollar studio and computer stuff to make a CD-ROM with text, audio and video, but today you can mix the whole thing together on a 200 dollar PC. So these factors combined might bring on a grassroots creative burst, and when you get the first viral success a-book you get publishers to sit up and take notice, unlike the CD-ROM “revolution” which was mostly top-down driven the a-book revolution might be bottom-up driven. I can’t wait to see:-)

I know it is not fashionable to worry these days. I should look to the future, see the opportunities, don´t worry, be happy, etc. But I DO worry.

Instead of the top tech trends that ALA and LITA does, I am going to name my top worries for public libraries.

1. Irrelevancy. A lot of libraries are great, they connect to their communities and do innovative stuff with technology and services. BUT a larger number of libraries does not! I worry that the network that libraries are will wither and die, and then the great and remarkable libraries will be few, and possibly dissapear because the concept of the library will become irrelevant to most communities. It will probably happen faster here in Europe, especially here in Norway, where years of low funding and neglect has taken its toll on both libraries and librarians.

2. Technological bypass. As technology develops the services that libraries provide are provided better by others. If e-books take off and there is an e-book reader that really makes e-book reading as pleasurable as p-book reading today, will libraries be part of that solution? I doubt it, especially when we look at the Kindle vs. libraries discussion going on in the US today. And it is not only books and reading, but reference (never a great selling point where norwegian libraries are concerned), outreach, literacy and “the third place” that we use as selling points for libraries, that others do better than us. If this trend continues, where does that leave libraries?

3. Identity crisis. When librarians in Norway discuss libraries, few, if any, take one step back and look at libraries from the outside. Most librarians subscribe to the philosophical school of “Libraries R´Us” and stop there. There is a great effort to protect libraries as reservations for the preservation of librarians more than a service to the community. This change of mission, from service to the preservation of the institution is probably common in many types of organisations, but it worries me that libraries have become the reason for librarians and vice versa.

4. Whining librarians, YES I am aware that I am rapidly heading in that direction, but so what? Librarians in norway complain a lot! They tend to look at anything new as a threat to the stability of their world (and they are probably right), and I should just shut up since I am one of the people threatening that stabilty, and at the same time wining about the threats I see.

Time to put on Monty Python!

I´m starting one of my life´s greatest adventures tomorrow. I´ll be a student for five years (only half time, but still) at the Oslo University College programme for postgraudate qualification in library science. This is not a Ph.D. programme as such, but will involve the same academic level and amount of work, and will focus more on practical development and unconventional modes of presentation of results than the traditional Ph.D. It is perfect for me, as I get a bit impatient with too much theory, and love to experiment and develop in my little library (which will become a sort of laboratry for the duration).

Anyway, the programme starts tomorrow, and I´m preparing as best I can. Since I want to document and remember as much as possible I´ll try to record as much as I can from both the seminars we´ll have and the work I do in my own library. I´ll take pictures, write, both on this blog, my norwegian blog and twitter. If I can I´ll make videos and post them on YouTube. The thing is though, that the thing I really want to do is to podcast. I worked in local radio in my youth, and loved it (this is 1982 when local radio was the new and rad thing in Norway) and want to do more. So I´m preparing to record sound, edit and post. This involves a lot of stuff I have long forgotten. My last period of podcasting was back in 2005 when one of the norwegain IT-news websites set up a free podcasting service (Freecast) that I used to record some podcasts where I waxed lyrical on library 2.0 and enjoyed the sound of my own voice. Then I recorded an interview with the norwegian author Eirik Newth that turned out quite well, and then an interview by Skype with Michael Stephens, as you can see I grew bolder:-) I also recorded a lecture by Marydee Ojala on developments in search (beyond Google) that she held here in Bergen. Then life kind of grabbed me by the scruff and demanded that I turned my attention elsewhere, and I kind of got distracted by our second child, and work. I have often thought that I should start podcasting again, but never got around to doing anything about it. So when the Freecast site was shut down in april this year (due to lack of intrest and possibly more competition) my podcasts dissapeared from the web. I really wanted to do something about it, but could not muster the energy and effort needed to research this to see what developments had happened on the podcasting scene since I stopped.

So the postgrad qualification prgramme was a perfect kick in the behind to start doing something about this. I started by looking at hosting my own podcast with my own blog and discovered that this was actually not too hard anymore. With WordPress there are serveral options, and I´m going for Blubrry PowerPress, which seems to integrat seamlessly into WP and do the things I want without too much fuss. I have tried to install it on my personal blog at www.miromurr.no and that worked really well, so next is my professional blog and then we´ll see if it works. I´ll re-publish my old podcasts to keep then on the web and tomorrow I´ll start recording for a completely new podcast. My first goal is to manage one podcast after each seminar, (there are four this fall) and also to do one at the Internet Librarian International conference in october. This is of course a plan, what really happens is another thing, but I hope that by posting this I have built up a certain pressure to at least give it a good shot.

Another thing that is kind of fun is to play with the themes on my blog. I´ll try a theme called Smashing Mulitimedia that is published by Smashing magazine. So far I have had some problems with the installation of the theme, so it might not be the right one for me, but I´ll give it a few more shots before I give up. Other than that I´m reading course literature, updating myself on Zotero and RefWorks (still don´t know which one I´ll end up using) and thinking about the stuff I want to do in the programme. Loads of fun should ensue:-)

Today I sent the resignation letter to our current ILS-vendor. The point of NO return has passed:-)

It promted another round of “OMG why am I doing this?” It is in many ways a leap of faith. We are the first library in Norway to switch to Koha, the translation is still not completely done and who knows what bugs and surprises we will get when we go live sometime in October. This would of course be true independent of the system we switch to, commercial or open source. The important thing for me, who initiated the whole thing, is that with Koha we are looking forward, we will get more features than our current ILS can deliver or develop in the forseeable future, and we introduce the concept of open source into the norwegian library systems marketplace.

Norwegian libraries need to embrace open source for many reasons. The formal reason; that the government now requires public institutions to consider open source when choosing software, the financial reason; that open source means you can test and try out systems without initial costs and that the implementation cost is way smaller than any other system on the norwegian library system marketplace, and finally the ideological reason: open source embodies many of the same values that libraries are funded on, sharing, equality, access and community.

To further the understanding of open source in the norwegian library community we have initiated the unconference Free and Open Libraries in Bergen 12.-13. november 2009. (Conference wiki – Norwegian only). The key-note speaker will be Nicole C. Engard from LibLime in the USA, and we will have Nicolas Morin from BibLibre in France and of course our own Magnus Enger from Libriotech who both will contribute. Even though Koha is a major theme for this conference we will try to cover as many aspects of free and open software as possible. The key-note speaker for day two will be Bjørn Venn from FriProg, the norwegian centre for free software. We will have a Open Software 101 session for those who want to learn the basics, we will let people discuss everything from programming to ideology and try to make the point of how important and useful open source is to libraries.

After an adventure filled holiday on the west coast of sweden (think shipwreck and serious bruises) I’m back at work and starting the wonderful adventure of a migration to Koha. The Koha patch that was absolutely neccesary to implement Koha at the naval academy was quickly built by the wonderful people at BibLibre at the specifications from our Koha support company Libriotech and ourselves.. It is now possible to add multiple copies in one go. This was neccesary as we also have the teaching collection in the ILS and in that collection most entries have between 50 and 150 copies. Too much work to add manually. Now you can just imput number of copies and the first barcode in the series and then stand back and see the copies with barcodes be added automatically. You still have to barcode the physical copies though:-/

There seems to be so many desicions to make, mostly on issues we should have resolved in our old catalog, so it is basically clearing up old sins of omission, and that is really a good thing. All systems should migrate once in a while to clear out the dust and clutter:-)

One of our tech guys here at the naval academy (have I told you what a great bunch of guys we have at our tech office, they RULE!) wondered if I wanted to have a mobile version of Koha so that we could use the HTC Magic phone with Android to scan barcodes while on the go? No longer lugging heavy laptops around in the library or going back to the desk to check a barcode or record information. Mobile computing FTW!
